Questions

From when do the BNS, BNSS and BSA apply?

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam came into force on 1 July 2024, replacing the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act.

Where do these correspondences come from?

From the correspondence tables published with the new laws (the NCRB tables), the same ones shown on each section page of our Bare Acts library. Where that table has no row, the official comparison tables of the Bureau of Police Research and Development and the Allahabad High Court fill the gap, and a section repealed before 2023 is shown with the repeal note from the India Code text of the old code. Where a provision has no counterpart, the converter says so instead of guessing.

Why does one old section map to more than one new section?

Several old provisions were split or merged. IPC 302, for example, is now BNS 103(1), while murder by a group of five or more on grounds such as caste or community is a separate provision, BNS 103(2). Open both sections and read the text before relying on a number.

What do "Not carried into the new law" and "Repealed before 2023" mean?

"Not carried into the new law" means the section was still in the old code on 30 June 2024 and the new Sanhita has no counterpart, such as IPC 309 (attempt to commit suicide). "Repealed before 2023" (or "Omitted before repeal") means an earlier law had already taken the section out of the old code, so no correspondence table lists it: IPC 161 to 165A, for example, were repealed by section 31 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and IPC 16 by an Adaptation Order of 1937.

Do the old sections still matter?

Yes. Offences committed and proceedings pending before 1 July 2024 can still be governed by the old codes, judgments and past papers refer to them, and exams often ask for the matching new section.
